It has been a necessity for at least the last couple iterations of OSX. It will be even more important when APFS arrives in a few months. Hard disk boot drives may actually be slower under APFS than they ever were. Some people have reported slower performance with GPU acceleration applied. They can hep in a very minor way when import, exporting, HDR-ing, and converting to DNG - the stuff we dont do very often, and can get a cup of coffee while its happening. Processors provide very little help in actually developing the photo. Photoshop and Lightroom cannot take advantage of hyperthreading.
